We are back with exciting news: Berlin Buzzwords will return June 18-20, 2023!

As always, we will kick of the conference with our traditional barcamp on Sunday, followed by two days filled with exciting talks.

Let's wrap up Berlin Buzzwords 2022!

Thank you for participating in Berlin Buzzwords 2022, be it online or on site! It has been three wonderful days filled with great talks on cutting edge topics and all time classics. There were amazing discussions, wonderful new encounters and some reunions after two years of video conferencing.

With four stages running in parallel even the most focused of us must have missed some interesting talk but we have good news: the recordings are all online now! Find them here, together with the talk abstract and in many cases the slides, or directly on our Youtube Channel.
Additionally you can take a look at the pictures by our talented photographer Jan Michalko. You can find them on our flickr (sometimes we like things old school).

We are always looking for ways to improve your experience at Berlin Buzzwords. In order to do so we need your feedback. Please fill out this years survey and tell us what you liked and where we could do better.

Because of our efforts for better inclusivity and more diversity, Berlin Buzzwords 2022 has been award a gold badge by CHAOSS. Therefore, we also want to encourage you to participate in our demographic survey. The answers will be used to create our yearly diversity and inclusivity report. We hope that this will help us planing even better events in the future.

Our Online Event for Berlin Buzzwords 2022

In the last two years, we have learned a lot about holding online conferences. As we now return to an onsite edition of Berlin Buzzwords for the first time after two exclusively online events, we want to incorporate the online component as a permanent addition to #bbuzz, in order to reach more people around the world, increase accessibility and reduce unnecessary travel.

Therefore, we are thrilled to announce our online event for Berlin Buzzwords 2022, thanks to our Partner OpenSearch. Without them & their commitment to accessibility, we wouldn’t have been able to make Berlin Buzzword a true hybrid event.

What do we offer?

For the first time in Berlin Buzzword history, there will be a dedicated Online Only Ticket available for only 39€ in our ticket shop! With that we want to increase outreach and make Berlin Buzzwords more accessible to people all around the world and offer an affordable ticket to make it easier to participate.

Additionally, in keeping with our commitment to diversity and inclusivity, we as organizers will provide a large amount of free online only tickets as part of our Diversity Ticket Initiative for members of underrepresented groups. This includes, but is not limited to: women, people of colour, LGBTQIA people, disabled people, and people facing economic or social hardships. You can get your diversity ticket and learn more about our efforts to make Berlin Buzzwords open and accessible to everyone here.

What does the online event include?

Purchasing our Online-Only-Ticket will give you access to our online platform Venueless, your central hub for the Berlin Buzzwords online event.

There, you will get access to live streams of all our four stages during the conference. You also have the ability to chat with other attendees and you can ask speakers questions using our Q&A tool.

We will also provide a moderated space to meet & chat with other online participants using Wonder Spatial Lounge, where you have the opportunity to discuss talks in a dedicated breakout area for each stage and also socialize with other attendees in an relaxed atmosphere.

Is there more?

As a new feature for Berlin Buzzwords 2022, we will live stream Stage Kesselhaus completely free of charge for everyone on YouTube! We hope that this will help us spread the word about Berlin Buzzwords and the topics discussed here as well as providing an easily accessible option to discover #bbuzz.

Thanks to Deutsche Bahn you can now book your journey to Berlin Buzzwords 2022 from June 12-14 using our event ticket from every train station in Germany for fixed prices starting at 49.50€. To book your ticket simply klick on the button below or use the following link and make sure to choose "Veranstaltungsticket" (event ticket) when booking your ticket!

Prices are fixed at a maximum of 49.50€ for Economy Class and 80.90€ for First Class, when booking a specific train, or 67.50€ for Economy and 98.90€ for unrestricted choice of trains. Every ticket also includes Deutsche Bahn's City Ticket, which allows free travel with public transportation to get you to the station where you start your train trip, and from the station where you disembark to your final destination.

You can also import your ticket into the the DB Navigator App using your order number.

By traveling with Deutsche Bahn you help us make Berlin Buzzwords more sustainable, since their trains run on 100% green energy! But no matter how you travel to Berlin this June, we can't wait to meet you there! We just released the first version of our schedule for this year's edition of Berlin Buzzwords! You can now explore all of our exciting talks and speakers on our website, using the following link. Please note that the dates provided may still change and new sessions might be added, so stay tuned while we finalize planning.

Some of our highlights for this year's program include:

Our keynote by Fiona Coath, who will talk about opposition to surveillance capitalism and our responsibilities as technologists.
Nick Burch, who will explore what Wordle can teach us about Information Retrieval, Search and AI/ML.
Noaa Barki will teach us what they learned from reading 100+ Kubernetes Post-Mortems.
Thomas Fricke will discuss how to optimize containers for security and scaling.
Qi Wu will explain how to optimize giant language models in order to be more energy effective and resource-saving using knowledge distillation.

With the release of our schedule for Berlin Buzzwords 2022, we also want to share more about our keynote by Fiona Coath with you!

Fiona is a lead software developer and consultant currently working at Thoughtworks. Her specialty is being a generalist. She enjoys problem solving across a range of technologies including natural language processing and data analytics. Her passion for social justice and equality keeps inspiring her to investigate the relationships between technology and society. When she isn’t solving challenging problems, she enjoys craft, exploring the world and the colour purple.

In her keynote, she will explore how to combat misinformation in an increasingly divisive age: What does it mean for democracy when we live in a world where hyper personalised misinformation and bot armies manipulate public opinion? This propaganda is fueled by social media companies, who's business depends on growing their user base, increasing engagement and improving targeting. Just getting visibility on what users are being shown is challenging, even with current EU regulations. As is often the case, users in the global south are most vulnerable, without robust regulation and with fewer moderators per user for many languages.

As technologists we are well positioned to understand this threat. How might we leverage this to create positive change? By exploring examples of people who blew whistles, enabled regulation, or taught others how to stay safe online, we can take back hope and get inspired to fight back against surveillance capitalism.

Berlin Buzzwords '22 will take place at Kulturbrauerei!

After two years of exclusively digital editions, we are thrilled that Berlin Buzzword will take place onsite in Berlin this year!

Our venue will be Kulturbrauerei, a monument of industrial culture and an event location in the heart of Berlin, in the vibrant neighborhood of Prenzlauer Berg, making it easily accessible via public transport or bike and offering ample opportunities for sightseeing, shopping, culture and related activities nearby.

Starting off as an actual brewery in the mid 19th century, the compound grew to over 25,000 m² over the years and brewed beer until production was discontinued in 1967. After that, the premises was listed as a historical building in 1974, but wasn't renovated until 1998, after which it was reopened as an event location.

Today, Kulturbrauerei is a unique location in Berlin, offering an exclusive atmosphere with impressive architecture.

Berlin Buzzwords 2022 will take place in several places within Kulturbrauerei, all named after old production buildings: Maschinenhaus and Kesselhaus will be the locations for our stages, where talks will be held. Palais Kulturbrauerei is the site of our partner area and is located in a building, that, in a true testimony to German compound nouns is actually called "Flaschenkühlraum" — which translates to "cold storage room for bottles". Palais sports a unique rooftop deck, where our traditional barcamp, hosted by Nick Burch, will take place. You can take a virtual 360° tour of our venue here

Without our program committee, Berlin Buzzwords wouldn‘t be Berlin Buzzwords. We‘re very happy to have such a great, engaged group of experts who help us each year to look through all the proposal and build an exciting program.

This year we are proud to welcome two new members to this group: Josh Devins and Anshum Gupta. Both have been integral parts of the Berlin Buzzwords community for years and their vast experience will bring fresh input to #bbuzz.

Anshum is an Apache Lucene and Solr committer and Project Management Committee member. He started dabbling with Lucene about 15 years ago, and since then has worked at various organizations building both internal and consumer facing search platforms on top of Lucene and Solr. He is currently a part of Apple's Open Source Technologies group.

Over the course of 20 years of industry experience, Josh has spent time in various roles and companies in both North America and Europe. He maintains a broad base of experience and knowledge, combined with various areas of depth such as team leadership, data science, distributed systems, software engineering and agile development practices. Josh likes working on effective data-driven products as much as building strong teams and organisations.

We would also like to take this opportunity to say thank you to Ted Dunning, Georgi Knox, Mandy Chessell, Owen O‘Malley and Gary Dusbabek, who after many years of supporting us on the program committee will step down from their roles. Their input has been invaluable and we are proud to have had them on our committee.

We are happy to finally announce the Call for Papers for Berlin Buzzwords 2022. It's been a while since we've had the opportunity to organize an in person event and we can't wait to see your session proposals and meet you again in June 2022.

What we offer

Being a speaker at Berlin Buzzwords is a great opportunity to share your knowledge and experience with fellow attendees. It is a great way to develop your ideas and get feedback from an engaged audience. Speaking at Berlin Buzzwords helps you gain experience on stage which you can reference as we record each session on video and publish them on YouTube.

An invitation to speak at Berlin Buzzwords includes a full conference pass with access to the conference as well as the barcamp on Sunday. We also offer free accommodation for 2 nights at a nearby hotel to speakers from outside of Berlin.

What we are looking for

Berlin Buzzwords is looking for talks on:

Search / IR systems – Lucene, Solr, Elasticsearch or comparable solutions
NoSQL – like Apache Cassandra, Flink, MongoDB, Hbase, CouchDB and others
Large Data Processing – Hadoop itself, MapReduce, Cascading etc.
Streaming topics such as Apache Flink or Apache Kafka
Scale and Store, Distribution of containerized applications (e.g. Kubernetes or Docker)
AI and Machine Learning topics
Search relevance and e-commerce search
Topics on open source communities and management

Selection process

There will be an anonymized review of all submissions. Members of the program committee will not be able to view your name or any other personal information given in your speaker profile so as to avoid unconscious bias.

Deadline

The Call for Papers deadline is February 14th, 2022 at midnight CET.
